Georgetown Then & Now: If You Build It, They Will Come

We compare two campus construction projects begun during nationwide economic recessions, including the new science center, slated to be completed next fall.

Draped lights illuminate Healy Hall for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1904. The sodality held annual celebrations on the feast day, Dec. 8.

Stained glass windows in Dahlgren Chapel of the Sacred Heart were removed yesterday to allow for restoration to the building’s 118-year-old foundation. A $6 million gift from L. Francis (C’75, L’78) and Kathleen (F’77) Rooney, in addition to support from other generous donors, initiated the much-needed renovation.

Taken exactly 100 years ago on Nov. 18, 1911, this photo captures a pre-game face-off between Georgetown’s Boston bull terrier and UVA’s mascot. Georgetown’s athletic teams have had canine mascots since at least the late 1800s.
